As a matte painting supervisor for Turbo, I was allowed to use my visual development experience to establish the look and direction of the environments early on. Basically, it was visual development that became the production environment. This was more like the way I was doing matte painting at Disney Feature Animation. I was working out of the visual development department when I created them. Often the matte painting environment was approved and given to the layout department, which was used to guide them in set dressing. All the matte paintings were done before the lighting department started their shots. For animation I think that’s the way to go.
